A Guide to Deal with Tacky Resin
Share
Dealing with tacky or sticky resin after your project has cured can be frustrating, especially when you've followed the steps carefully—or thought you did. Whether you're creating resin art, jewelry, or coating surfaces, tacky spots can occur for several reasons: from improper mixing to environmental issues.
In this guide, we’ll break down the most common causes of tacky resin, how to identify what went wrong, and the best step-by-step solutions to fix it. Whether your resin is slightly sticky, gooey, or completely uncured, this article will help you rescue your project and prevent future mishaps.
HERE ARE THE THREE MOST COMMON SCENARIOS OF TACKY RESIN AND SOLUTIONS TO TACKLE THEM-
1. Partially Uncured- Sticky Patches Even After the Curing Period
If your surface is mostly cured but has soft, sticky, or wet spots, it’s likely due to improper mixing—especially if you scraped the sides of the mixing container while pouring. Unmixed resin or hardener can stick to the sides and contaminate your well-mixed batch.
Fix:
-
Scrape off as much of the uncured resin as possible.
-
Do NOT pour a new layer over gooey or gummy resin—remove all wet material first to prevent it from leaking into the next layer.
-
Once the surface is clean and dry, fill any cracks, voids, or craters with freshly mixed resin.
2. Fully Uncured Even After the Full Curing Period
This issue is typically caused by:
-
Incorrect mixing ratios
-
Inadequate mixing
-
Curing in a cold environment
-
Adding too much colorant or additive
Fix:
-
Move your piece to a warmer area for 24 hours (ideal resin curing time is 20–24 hours).
-
If it still doesn’t cure, re-pour a fresh coat, ensuring you mix and measure correctly.
-
For widespread tackiness, sand the entire sticky surface with a sandpaper, then apply a new resin layer.
-
For small voids or uneven surfaces left after removing the uncured lumps, pour in another batch of accurately mixed resin-hardener solution and fill in .
3. Not Curing Despite Correct Temperature Conditions Are Fulfilled-
Using anything other than the recommended mixing ratio for resin to hardener. If not, it will prevent proper curing. Similarly, adding too much pigment, dye, or alcohol ink can interfere with the chemical reaction needed for curing.
Fix:
-
Always follow the manufacturer’s recommended mixing ratio (2:1 or 3:1 as per the product label).
-
Mix thoroughly for at least 3–5 minutes, scraping the sides and bottom of the mixing container.
-
Limit colorant to just a few lumps or pinches, restrict it to the exact amount that’s sufficient to achieve the desired colour depth.
Resin- Hardener Mixing Guide:
Whenever a resin product name carries the labels “2:1” / “3:1” , it refers to the ideal proportion for resin and hardener blending. 2:1 simply means for every every 2 parts of resin solution its recommended to use 1 part of the hardener solution. Likewise, for a 3:1 product, 3 parts of the resin solution need 1 part of the hardener solution.
For OYTRA ART RESIN - 2:1, for every 30 grams of resin, you’ll need 15 grams of hardener.
For OYTRA's 3:1 DEEP POUR RESIN, for every 30 grams of resin you would require 10 grams of hardener.
You can perform this calculation seamlessly by using a Weighing Scale Machine.
Nailed the Process, But the Resin Still Failed? Let’s Talk Resin Quality!
While technique, environment, and mixing ratios all play crucial roles in achieving a perfect cure, the quality of the resin itself is equally important. Low-grade or improperly formulated resins can result in inconsistent cures, yellowing, bubbles, or weak finishes—regardless of how carefully you follow the steps.
That’s why choosing a trusted, high-performance resin like OYTRA Art Resin can make all the difference.
