Common Mistakes When Using UV Resin & How to Avoid Them

UV Resin is loved by everyone who is a crafter at heart, and if you are one of those crafters, then you may have already fallen in love with resin because of the crystal-clear finish that resin provides to your art, like jewellery, charms, and small decorative items. But we also understand that beginners and not only beginners, experienced professionals also should make some mistakes that lead to unsatisfactory creativity.

In this blog, we have mentioned some common mistakes you should avoid while using resin and hardener and so that your projects come out clean and professional-looking without any bubbles.

1. Wrong Mold

If you are a beginner and thinking you can use any Molds, then you are wrong because not every Mold is suitable for UV, and this is why it's recommended to use only clear or light-coloured silicone Molds so that UV light can reach the Mold properly and can cure the resin effectively.

However, many beginners do use dark coloured Molds, and this ultimately leads to blockage of UV light, and hence those artists are not able to see the best results with resin.

2. Pouring Thick Layers

If you are pouring resin mixture all at once and leaving it under the UV lamp for fast results then it's not going to convert the way you think it will because pouring more than 3-5mm all at once creates the thick layers that leads to improper cure and this is why you should always pour a small amount and put in under the UV lamp for cure and then only pour the next layer. Repeat this same process again and again until your Mold is filled. This will give you the best results and glossy finish that you want to achieve with your art.

3. Weak UV Light

The curing process of the art also depends on the UV light and many beginners and even experienced artist sometimes do this mistake because they buy the low voltage UV light and leave their art piece under the UV light for 24-48 hours and even after this much waiting time, the curing process doesn't get completed properly and they starting blaming the quality of resin and hardener. However, this mistake can easily be avoided when you use at least a 36W or higher UV Light/Lamp for the curing process.

You can also opt for natural sunlight option but that's not always consistent, which is why buying the UV light will be the best option for you.

4. Skipping Surface Preparation

One of the most common mistakes for beginner is that they forget to prepare the surface, and because of this, their designs doesn't come out the way they think they should come out. This happens because of the resin's sticky nature, and if you haven't even cleaned the surface, then there might be dust in your design, or a proper glossy shine will not be there.

This is a recommendation that every time you try to make something, always clean resin art moulds with a soft cloth before any kind of use.

5. Not Mixing Pigments Properly

We know you want to add colour to your small decorative items that you have created, but you also have to make sure that adding too much pigment or glitter can affect the texture of your items. Your final product appearance gets negatively affected, like clumping, opaque finish, etc.

Give proper time to get UV resin hard, and only use a small number of pigments when creating your artwork, like less than 10%, and then cure it properly under the UV light.

Conclusion

UV resin is fun, and it's an item that gives life to your artwork. Just avoid some common mistakes, and you are good to go with your resin creativity.
